I say this without snark: The pain here is real, but it's not about immigration. H-1B holders make up a small share of the workforce. This is likely about AI, which can now code thousands of lines in seconds. That's eliminating jobs. No immigration policy will change that.

This is why I really do feel for Gen Z. This young woman was told her whole life by every authority figure that she should study hard, do well in school, and pursue a career in tech. She went to Purdue, one of the best engineering schools in the country. She studied computer science, not gender ideology or basket weaving.
And still she could not even get a job at Chipotle let alone in her field. She did literally everything “right” but, to what end? This situation is not sustainable. H1B and other work visas, as well as offshoring, are getting out of control and abusive. Policymakers should care about the young generation.

The debate about H-1B workers continues to be detached from reality. Despite the narrative, they're a small percentage of workers, and the vast majority of applicants who enter the lottery do not win. You can't scapegoat immigration for every problem.
Also, not enough attention is paid to the COVID tech hiring sprees. Many companies overdid it & had to backtrack as the pandemic ended. The tech market has been tough for a while, hence the many layoffs. It’s not shocking that some 22-year-olds can’t land $165K jobs right now.
Some anecdata: A close friend works at AT&T, which over-hired during COVID & has been doing layoffs galore. They recently mandated everyone relocate to a major office—in hopes that swaths of people would quit instead. Reducing every problem to "immigration bad" isn't helpful.

@bananamoat Agree with you on the market swings, which I also noted. The reason I mention AI is because the article is specifically about entry-level coders, which are most vulnerable to disruption with the strides in tech

@pikaachu_07 Didn't say it was just AI, agree with you on the hiring sprees which I mentioned here:

Also, uh, the NYT story here ends with the main character landing a tech sales job, which are often very lucrative. The market changes. People adapt. That’s life. The “immigrants are stealing our jobs” panic is so often a work of fiction.
