Nations require a demos. And by “demos”, I mean a cohesive group of people with enough shared worldview and identity to make self-rule possible in the first place. But if you keep expanding the demos to include literally every single person in the world, then political decision-making will eventually collapse into either managerial tyranny or tribalistic balkanization. And this is essentially what is happening. The more Western nations embrace globalization, the more the demos becomes fractured and incapable of holding those nations together.
