One of the BIGGEST shifts in startups over the last decade is that you can build a $20M+ ARR business without ANY press coverage. it used to be if Techcrunch or the New York Times didn’t write about you, you were INVISIBLE. customers would wonder if you were legit. investors wanted that credibility. the media set the narrative and you played by their rules. that world is GONE. today, you can speak DIRECTLY to your market every single day. you can build an audience on social, turn followers into customers, and customers into evangelists. you can raise capital from people who have been quietly watching your work online for months. you can attract the best hires because they already feel like they know you through your posts and your product. ARR speaks LOUDER than any article. you can reinvest profits into content, and that content gets seen by millions. i used to BEG journalists to write about my startups. it was make or break. now, i never think about it. it is entirely possible to grow a $20M+ business while the press has no idea you exist. of course, it's always awesome to get nice press about you company. it's the icing on the cake though not the cake. the #1 reason to go on TV now is so you can clip it and pump it on social. that clip will probably get more impressions than the original broadcast and gives you something to share with your mom. TLDR; you don’t need to beg journalists. you don’t need a PR agency. you don’t need a press release. it's a nice to have. just build. just ship. just share. just keep going.
