8 years avoiding futures. 1 week trading perps. More lessons than I expected. My leverage journey starts here…
When I first got into stocks and crypto, the veterans around me kept repeating the same advice: don’t touch futures, don’t use leverage. I’d read countless stories of people getting rekt with high leverage, so I followed that rule. For almost eight years, I never once traded a contract or used leverage. It may sound hard to believe, but even up to today, every time I opened HyperLiquid futures, I felt a slight tremor in my chest. There was always this fear inside me—a deep-rooted belief that leverage would unleash a volatility beast I could never control.
Looking back, that barrier I set for myself protected me. I was never liquidated, never wiped out chasing leveraged gains. Even in brutal bear markets, when my spot positions took heavy losses, I kept hodling strong.
But by avoiding leverage, I also kept myself from truly understanding how derivatives work. I shouldn’t be afraid of learning new things. Avoiding leverage is one thing—but not understanding how to use it properly is another.
Until a week ago, I had finally arrived on HyperLiquid to start trading perps. First trade, newbie luck, instant profit, didn’t take, then went under the cost. I decided to DCA, soon overleveraged without much thinking and deep in the water. I got creative and hedged my losing long by opening shorts. It actually worked, and I started to accumulate wins and take profits. Made rookie mistakes, cut a huge loss when the market was down. Took quite some scalp wins. Many lessons there.
I want to document my leverage journey here—to record, to reflect, to learn, and to improve.
This might be one of the toughest times to trade, with the market swinging violently up and down. But the toughest times make the toughest traders. Trade responsibly. Best wishes, and good luck!
