One of the extraordinary quirks of history will be the decline of the expert class only a year or two before the birth of modern artificial intelligence. Historians will likely conflate these two moments— the Covid era institutional collapse looks like it left the massive hole for widely-used consumer AI, but these are clearly distinct movements. Many of the most important players in AI were (and are) avowed institutionalists and rule followers, and happily complied with the expert and manager class during Covid and the hysteria of the early 2020s. But wild to think it will look like we replaced credentialed experts with intelligent machines at the same time, and that all of this was by design.
